Simple Homemade Ketchup Recipe (No High Fructose Corn Syrup!)

Here's a simple homemade ketchup recipe that will satisfy your condiment needs without unhealthy ingredients.

High fructose corn syrup is a main ingredient in a number of condiments including ketchup. High fructose corn syrup is the cheaper cousin to sugar, and as a result, it’s added to a host of processed foods. Not to mention all the preservatives, additives, artificial flavors and artificial colors found in conventional ketchup. While organic ketchups do not contain high fructose corn syrup, because it’s a genetically modified ingredient, they many contain lots of added sugars.

Recently, I went to a restaurant that made its own ketchup, so I decided to give it a try. I was surprised at how easy it was and the fact that the majority of the ingredients are just a pantry away.

Simple Homemade Ketchup Recipe

Makes 1 cup

Ingredients6 oz. can of organic tomato paste

1/4 cup organic honey

1/2 cup organic white vinegar (you may need less depending on how sour you like it)

1 teaspoon lemon juice (a squeeze)

1/4 cup water (you can add more water if you want it runnier)

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Whisk the ingredients together and add to a small saucepan over medium heat. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, stirring often. Let cool. Store in a glass container or jar. Remember that this ketchup doesn’t contain preservatives so it won’t keep as long. It will keep for up to two weeks in the fridge.

Avoid hidden chemicals in your condiments by cutting back on the amount of condiments that you use overall and buying higher quality items when you do use them. If you’re going to make fresh whole food meals, why not make fresh condiments as well? I can’t think of anything yummier than hand cut french fries paired with homemade ketchup.
